Hardenhuish Headlines

Dear Parents

Term 6 is now well under way with numerous events taking place including our Literature Festival this week where there have been a number of events to enable our young people to engage with various authors and their work.

I hope that you saw the communication regarding Sports Week, another opportunity for our young people to get involved and raise money alongside this for the refurbishment of the changing rooms. We will be sharing further opportunities for contributions to be made to this project in the near future.

The Pride Picnic at lunchtime today was joyful. Thank you to the young people and staff involved in organising it and to all those who attended.

Another opportunity for young people to get active is the annual River Run organised by Chippenham Harriers. Details are on the Community page of our website, and the Harriers are keen to support any entries from Hardenhuish by offering a 15% discount on entry.

Our Chinese visitors are fully embracing life at Hardenhuish and have this week visited Oxford as part of their UK tour. Sophia who is the Executive Principal of Suzhou Science and Technology Town Foreign Language School returns to China at the weekend and we wish her a safe journey and thank her for contribution to Hardenhuish during her time here. We hope that she has enjoyed her experience.

The various exams continue to go well and I would like to congratulate Year 9  and 12 for how well they have managed their exams and their positive attitude throughout.

Sports Week

The PE Department and School Parliament have organised a fun-filled Sports Week, the week commencing Tuesday 25 June. This week aims to celebrate all things sporty and give students the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities throughout the week culminating in an Olympic-themed Sports Day.

Following the exciting renovation of our school gym earlier this year, we are now planning to refurbish our gym changing rooms. During Sports week, student leaders including representatives from School Parliament, Year Councils, and our Student Ambassadors, are hosting events to fundraise for this refurbishment. We are hoping that the money raised during Sports Week will make our gym offering even more fabulous for students now and in the future!

Sports Week promises to be an exciting week of activities for students to get involved including taking part in a yoga session, e-sports competition, or a penalty shoot-out, attending a lecture from a former professional sprinter and bob skeleton athlete, and much more. Students can sponsor their teachers who are taking part in a sponsored ride and row the distance from Hardenhuish to the Olympic Games in Paris on Tuesday. During the event, staff will be motivated by tunes from our student-led Hardenhuish Radio, and students can donate to request their favourite song or give staff an encouraging shout-out! Students can buy tickets to a sports raffle with prizes ranging from rugby tickets to lessons with a pro golfer at Castle Combe golf course. There is a sportswear themed non-uniform day on Thursday and an Olympic-themed Sports Day on Friday with facepainting, ice-lolly and drinks for sale at the event

To take part in any event, students can either bring £1 to the activity or their Sports Week card – a pre-pay card that can be purchased for £5 on Arbor and allows students to take part in six different events throughout the week. If you would like to sponsor our staff team on their ‘journey to Paris’, then this is also available on the Arbor school shop. We hope students will really enjoy getting involved!

Wiltshire Track and Field Championships

On Saturday 8 June, 17 Hardenhuish students competed in the Wiltshire Track and Field Athletics Championships at Swindon Athletics Track.

Students were representing Hardenhuish and North Wiltshire competing against the top athletes from all areas of Wiltshire.

It was a pleasure to watch the Hardenhuish athletes compete but also to see how well they supported and cheered on their teammates throughout the competition.

It was a long day with the first race commencing at 9.45am and the final competition starting at 4.15pm, with many of the track events having heats followed by finals, which is a real test of the athletes fitness.

There were many outstanding performances throughout the day including:

Tommy Mattis-King– 1st in Triple Jump and 1st in 100m Hurdles

Tobi Loughlin 1st in 3000m

Natasha Moyes 3rd in 300m Hurdles

Daniel Coward 4th in Triple Jump

Tom Southgate 3rd in 200m

Harry Glover 4th in 100m

Dan Phelps 4th in 1500m

Sebatien Retter 5th in Long Jump

Adam Armstrong 5th in Discus

James Rymer 4th in Triple Jump

Sophie Phelps 4th in her heat for 300m

Tommy, Tobi, Natasha, and Alannah have all been selected to represent Wiltshire in the Southwest Track and Field Championships this weekend. We wish all four athletes the best of luck for this next round, if they do well they will be in with a chance of being selected for the English Schools Finals in July.
